Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the Silk Road marketplace, recently made headlines by auctioning a collection of personal and prison era belongings for 12.31 Bitcoin, equivalent to approximately $1.3 million at current market rates. Hosted by Scarce City, a Bitcoin focused marketplace, the Ross Ulbricht auction featured a range of items from his time behind bars and his life before his 2013 arrest.

The sale included prison identification cards, a blank rehabilitation program notebook, oil paintings created during his incarceration, and even the sweatsuit and sneakers he wore upon his release. Among the standout pieces was Ulbricht’s final prison ID, issued just months before his release from a facility in Arizona. This item fetched the highest bid of 5.5 Bitcoin. This transfer, flagged by blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain, followed months of smaller contributions from supporters.

Notably, after Ulbricht’s pardon by President Donald Trump in January 2025, his donation wallet saw an influx of over 2.6 Bitcoin across more than 170 transactions in a single day. The massive $31 million transfer, however, prompted speculation among online commentators. Some suggested it might not be a donation but a self-transfer from wallets Ulbricht may have controlled before his arrest, though no evidence has confirmed this theory.

Ulbricht’s transition to freedom was marked by his first public appearance at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Nashville.
