NYSE Owner ICE Bets on Blockchain as Bitcoin ETFs Break August Records
Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, is moving deeper into crypto infrastructure. ICE tapped blockchain firm tZERO to help build the transfer-agent and broker-dealer systems needed to settle tokenized securities trades on-chain, while also investing in tZERO's latest financing round and licensing its portfolio of 103 blockchain patents. tZERO is expected to become an approved digital transfer agent on ICE's planned NYSE-affiliated Digital Trading Platform, subject to regulatory requirements.
The deal underscores how Wall Street's tokenization push is moving beyond simply placing stocks and bonds on blockchain rails. Citi has projected that tokenized securities could reach $5.5 trillion by 2030, as banks, asset managers, and market operators experiment with shifting traditional financial assets onto distributed ledgers. ICE and tZERO also said they will explore whether tokenized assets could eventually be used as collateral at ICE clearinghouses.
ETF Inflows Hit 2026 High as Strategy Resumes Buying
On the institutional demand front, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded roughly $3.52 billion in net inflows during August, their best monthly result of 2026, even as the Bitcoin price gained about 25% over the same period. However, those same funds saw $236.46 million in net outflows on September 1 alone, the largest single-day withdrawal since July 31, according to SoSo Value data. Glassnode analyst Frederik Theissen described the market as rangebound, noting that sentiment has cooled from euphoria to neutral and flagging rising bond yields as the main headwind ahead.
Separately, Strategy resumed Bitcoin purchases after a two-month pause, deploying $370 million into BTC. Bitcoin dominance climbed to 59.58% as the total crypto market cap slipped 2.70% to $2.63 trillion, reflecting a defensive rotation into BTC over altcoins. With the CME FedWatch tool showing a 66.4% chance of a 25-basis-point rate hike later this month, traders are watching the August CPI print on September 11 and the mid-month FOMC decision as the two macro events most likely to determine Bitcoin's next directional move.
