Bitcoin Rebounds Above $82K as Altcoins Surge and CFTC Crypto Rules Face Clock

Bitcoin staged a sharp recovery on Friday morning after briefly touching $79,800 overnight, a level that had been defended twice in the prior week. Whale accumulation helped fuel the bounce, with Santiment reporting 20,338 Bitcoin wallets holding between 10 and 10,000 BTC, an all-time high. Analysts at CoinGecko placed BTC's market capitalization at roughly $1.65 trillion, with $32.88 billion in 24-hour trading volume, while spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted a modest $5.06 million in net inflows on Thursday even as Ethereum funds shed $60.22 million.

The broader macro backdrop complicated the recovery. Both the Consumer Price Index and the Producer Price Index for September came in above analysts' expectations this week, and Brent crude oil prices sat above $106 per barrel Friday morning. Despite those pressures, Bitcoin and Ethereum held gains, moving in step with precious metals rather than falling alongside risk assets.

Altcoins Lead the Session as Fed Chair Stays Silent

With Bitcoin largely range-bound near $82,100, select altcoins grabbed the spotlight. Celestia jumped 16% to around $0.68, Injective rose 7.7%, and LayerZero added 7.3%, leaving more than two-thirds of the CoinDesk 100 constituents in the green. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh declined to signal the central bank's next move, and market odds of an October rate increase slid to roughly 15% from nearly 30%, giving risk assets a mild tailwind heading into the weekend.

Solana also attracted attention as its Alpenglow network upgrade, scheduled for October 21, drew closer. SOL rose 4.3% over 24 hours to near $106.43 even as fund outflows from Solana investment products extended into an eighth consecutive day, a dynamic analysts said reflected caution about broader macro conditions rather than skepticism about the upgrade itself.

On the regulatory front, The Block reported that TD Cowen's Washington Research Group warned the CFTC's newly proposed crypto framework, which would create a federal oversight category called a crypto asset market for leveraged and margined digital-asset exchanges, may not be finalized until early 2028. With the 2028 election cycle looming, analysts cautioned the rulemaking timeline could upend work done by the current administration before the rules ever take effect. The proposal is intended to complement the SEC's own Regulation Crypto Assets framework, released in August 2026, together creating a division of regulatory labor between the two agencies.
