Bitcoin Nears Historic Streak, Strategy Buys More, Russia Legalizes Crypto

Bitcoin is trading near $86,000 this morning, and according to CoinDesk, the asset is on track for its first July-to-September winning streak since 2012. Gains of 4.8% in July and 25.2% in August have carried into September, which is now up roughly 10.9%, a three-month run that has occurred only once in Bitcoin's history.

Analysts are quick to temper comparisons to 2012. The 2012 streak eventually preceded a gain of more than 2,000%, but today's market structure is driven by institutional capital, spot ETFs, and regulated derivatives channels that did not exist then. Giottus CEO Vikram Subburaj noted that the rally's continuation now depends on whether large pools of capital keep allocating after the easiest gains have been made.

Strategy Adds BTC as Russia Moves Toward Full Legalization

On the corporate treasury front, Investing News reports that Michael Saylor's Strategy acquired 950 BTC for $75.7 million between September 14 and September 20, paying an average of $79,670 per coin. The purchase, disclosed in an 8-K filing, brings the firm's total holdings to 846,000 BTC acquired for $63.80 billion, putting it within roughly 1,363 coins of its all-time record.

Separately, KuCoin's daily market report highlights a significant regulatory development: Russia announced the legalization of cryptocurrency circulation, with the industry potentially receiving full legal status by year-end. The news adds to a growing list of countries formalizing digital asset frameworks in 2026, even as the U.S. CLARITY Act remains stalled in the Senate following a failed cloture vote earlier this month.

Also watching markets today, approximately $1.81 billion in BTC and ETH options are set to expire this Friday. Bullish options positioning and continued whale accumulation have kept risk appetite elevated, though traders expect the approaching expiry to amplify short-term price volatility heading into the weekend.
