Bitcoin Liquidity Rebounds as Tokenization and Token Unlocks Shape Markets

One year after the crypto flash crash of October 10, 2025, Bitcoin and Ether markets have largely healed. Bitcoin and Ether order books now hold more resting liquidity than on the day of the crash or at the start of 2026, with gains holding in dollar terms and reflecting more capital from market makers rather than simply cheaper coins. Altcoins, however, tell a different story, with liquidity continuing to erode and spot trading volumes remaining well below their October 2025 peak.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin itself is hovering near $82,900 this Sunday morning, down roughly 2.1% on the week, with Ether off 6.8%, Solana down 8.1%, and XRP sliding 5.8%. ETF outflows have added to the pressure, with U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recording nearly $986M in net withdrawals so far in October, including a single-day outflow of $484.9M that marked the largest daily withdrawal since June.

Nasdaq CEO and Token Unlocks Add New Dimensions

On the institutional front, Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman made waves Sunday by declaring that tokenization could free up tens of billions of dollars in capital tied up in assets used as collateral across the global financial system. Friedman cited Treasurys, equities, and money market funds as prime candidates for tokenization, and noted that institutional interest in the space had grown over the past year. She also warned that continuous trading of tokenized assets would require real-time risk controls and sufficient liquidity.

Adding a supply-side dimension to this week's market narrative, crypto projects are scheduled to unlock approximately $1.14B in tokens over the next 30 days, according to DefiLlama data captured on October 11. A concentrated $291.61M is set to release in the coming week alone across 370 tracked protocols, with Aptos and Pump.fun flagged as the two projects facing the most significant near-term supply tests. Analysts caution that while the calendar establishes the scale of upcoming releases, it does not provide sufficient evidence to forecast their price impact.
