Bitcoin Dominance Hits 60 Percent as Stablecoin Rules and Futures Access Expand
Bitcoin tightened its grip on the broader crypto market Thursday, with its dominance rate climbing to 60% of total digital-asset market value, the highest reading since May. The move signals a renewed preference for BTC, with investors favoring the largest cryptocurrency over alternative coins as altcoin prices fell across the board. The rise in dominance came amid muted price action, with Bitcoin slipping below $82,000 on Thursday after a brief push above $84,000 on Wednesday.
The market rotation arrives alongside fresh regulatory clarity from Washington. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency became the first federal regulator to finalize its GENIUS Act stablecoin rule, publishing it Wednesday with an effective date of January 18, 2027. The OCC rule creates a regulatory framework for permitted stablecoin issuers, establishing pathways for banks and non-bank companies to conduct payment stablecoin activities, and sets standards for foreign stablecoin issuers and for custodying assets.
Bitcoin Perpetual Futures Head to Mainstream Brokerages
On the access front, Webull plans to put Kalshi's regulated perpetual futures in front of eligible American brokerage customers, announcing an initial November rollout on October 20, 2026. The CFTC approved Kalshi's BTCPERP contract on May 29, and Webull expects wider access before the end of 2026, with an initial lineup including Bitcoin and selected crypto assets subject to listing requirements.
The stablecoin rule carries significant weight for an already massive market. Tether's USDT carried a $182.8B market cap and Circle's USDC another $72.1B on October 21, representing more than $254B in dollar-pegged assets that will sit inside the OCC's new framework. Issuers now have exactly 89 days from publication to bring operations into line before the framework becomes binding, a timeline that compliance teams across the industry are already racing to meet. Together, Thursday's three developments paint a market consolidating around Bitcoin, welcoming regulated infrastructure, and extending access to a wider base of retail investors.
