Authorities in France Enhance Security for French Crypto Entrepreneurs After Kidnappings

French cryptocurrency entrepreneurs and their families are set to receive heightened security measures following a series of violent kidnappings targeting industry leaders. Since the beginning of 2025, at least three incidents have shaken France’s crypto sector, including two successful kidnappings and one thwarted attempt that left a violent bloody scene. The French interior ministry has responded with a robust plan to protect these high-profile figures, signaling a commitment to safeguarding the nation’s growing crypto industry. As the sector grows, so too does the attention of organized crime, prompting swift action from authorities.

The new security measures include priority access to police emergency lines, home visits from law enforcement, and tailored safety briefings to educate crypto leaders on best practices. Additionally, French police will undergo specialized training to combat crypto asset money laundering, a move aimed at addressing the financial motivations behind these crimes. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who announced the measures, emphasized the urgency of protecting the industry. The string of attacks began earlier this year with the kidnapping of Ledger co-founder David Balland, followed by the abduction of a crypto entrepreneur’s father in early May. The most recent incident occurred on May 13, 2025, when four individuals attempted to kidnap the daughter and grandson of Paymium CEO Pierre Noizat in broad daylight. The audacity of the attack, which took place on a public street, highlights the growing boldness of criminals targeting crypto wealth. France’s organized crime prosecutor is leading the investigations, with several suspects already in custody.

Retailleau, who met with crypto industry leaders on May 16, 2025, suggested that the incidents may be linked, pointing to a possible coordinated effort by criminal networks. The minister’s proactive stance reflects the government’s recognition of the crypto sector’s economic importance and the unique risks faced by its leaders. However, not all industry figures are convinced of the government’s approach. Noizat, speaking to French broadcaster BFMTV, described the meeting as a “communications operation,” hinting at skepticism about the effectiveness of the proposed measures.

The surge in kidnapping attempts highlights the darker side of the crypto boom, where vast wealth can attract dangerous attention.
